Cavemen is an unprecedented television show.  It's as if the Budweiser frogs or the Energizer bunny has suddenly received a pilot from a major network.  Never before has a TV show been borne out of an advertising campaign, let alone from an insurance company.  Everyone knows the Geico Cavemen by now, the Cro-Magnons who bristle at the unfair treatment their “kind” receive by society.  So, ABC, how did you develop an ad campaign into a half-hour prime-time comedy?

Bill English, Nick Kroll (Human Giant), and Sam Huntington (Superman Returns) play Joel, Nick and Andy, respectively.  They are three Cavemen who live together and struggle to get by in a modern society that looks down upon the Cro-Magnon man.  Their trials and travails while venturing out into a world with unfair biases is the basis for Cavemen's comedy.  Although Cavemen is a satire of modern-day racism, don't be concerned: Cavemen is a full-fledged comedy.  The pilot was directed by Will Speck, who recently directed the Will Ferrell big screen hit Blades of Glory.  Speck knows his comedy.

The pilot for Cavemen has received mixed reviews, and ABC has been in the midst of some major creative changes as a result.  Cavemen certainly has hit potential, especially since the audience will have a built-in familiarity with the characters, thanks to Geico.  There has been a modicum of controversy regarding the Cavemen pilot, mostly concerning the two original actors who played the Cavemen in the commercials.  Jeff Daniel Phillips and Ben Weber were not cast in the roles they originally inhabited, which angered some people.  Nonetheless, the current Cavemen seem to be to ABC's liking.
