With Castle's Captain Montgomery falling prey to deception, betrayal and death at the end of season 3, the 12th Precinct was in need of a new leader. Now, the new captain has been cast -- and she will be played by Penny Johnson Jerald.

The actress, who is best known for parts on 24 (she played Sherry Palmer, former spouse of President David Palmer, until her shooting death at the end of season 3) and The Larry Sanders Show (as Larry's assistant, Betsy Barnes), will play the character of Captain Victoria Gates on Castle.

According to a report from TVGuide.com, the new cop on the scene will come to the 12th Precinct from Internal Affairs (always a scary place).

Jerald's character definitely doesn't sound quite as warm and fuzzy as her predecessor. The woman's nickname is "Iron Gates," and she will not be a big fan of the Beckett-Castle pairing (at least until Castle's many charms inevitably win her over). Gates also won't be quite as focused on the internal workings of her department at first, instead trying to use the position to rise in the ranks of the New York Police Department.

Castle's newest cast member has had a long career in television. Penny Johnson Jerald has appeared in episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, ER, The 4400 and NCIS.

Alas, the Castle producers didn't listen to me on the casting choices:

But I guess I'm OK with that. After all, Castle's choice of Penny Johnson Jerald is probably way better than any of mine anyway.
