Producer's Choice

Lee - "Everybody Hurts" by REM

The producer's have chosen another heart string tugger for Lee tonight. Unfortunately, it's another mellow song and it could be hard to make it memorable as a performance except for the emotional impact it leaves. Lee starts of shaky vocally, his growl at times turns into a bit of a squawk, but he finds his footing mid-song.

Just like his performance of "Hallelujah," Lee has a backing gospel choir and much like that performance, the song pulls a lot of the weight. Unlike the past few weeks, I just don't feel the fire or passion from Lee. Because for a song about heartbreak, Lee's rendition made me feel nothing. He's going to have to kill it with the coronation song, because his first performances haven't been the kind that wins you a closely contested competition.

Simon Says: "You went a little bit off melody at parts. What I'm getting from you tonight, is your nervous. When you come out for your last performance, I want 10 out of 10."

Crystal - "Black Velvet" by Alannah Myles

Hello dramatic lighting and entrance ... Crystal stands atop the big Nokia stairs that are lit aflame, before trying not fall down them in spike heels. I am not crazy (at all) about this song for Crystal, but it shows off her bluesy passion and her vocals do indeed sound whiskey-soaked. Just like "Maybe I'm Amazed" this is a choice that finds the producers begging Crystal to be anything but an acoustic folk singer and with that big gigantic note at the end, which she hit with aplomb, Crystal once again proves she could be if she wanted to. (But she doesn't.) I never wanted to hear Crystal sing that song, but I'm glad that she did ... it showed that she's really bringing 100% to tonight. To borrow a term from earlier in the season, Crystal is singing for her life, while Lee's just singing.

Simon Says: "I had a little bit of a problem, because I'm almost allergic to that song. But I've got to tell you, you took that song and you absolutely nailed it. I'm very impressed, I mean, really good."
