American Idol 8: Top 7, Part 2 - Electric Boogaloo
American Idol 8: Top 7, Part 2 - Electric Boogaloo
Time to do it again.  Matt Giraud was mercifully spared the embarrassing fate of being out-paced by Lil Rounds on American Idol last night, and the world is better off for it.  This is exactly why the Judges' Save was put in place.  Maybe Matt Giraud didn't deserve to advance based on his Tuesday performance, but that's not really the point of the save.  It's not just there to give the saved a chance at redemption, it's there to give America a second chance at eliminating the correct person.  In this case, that person was Lil Rounds.  Matt Giraud deserved to make it further than Lil.  That's why the save was used, and I'm sure this weighed on the judges' minds last night.  As we look forward to Top 7 Week: Take 2, there are three troubling truths that I'm having a difficult time reconciling:

1) The theme is Disco

2) David Archuleta will be performing on the Results Show

3) Paula Abdul will choreograph the group number

The end is nigh, Idol fans.

While Danny Gokey has become my go-to whipping boy this season (it's only the beginning, friends – Gokey will probably be around for another month), I miss David Archuleta.  He was so easy to despise.  And, yes, I am trying to bait the Archie supporters right now.  I know you're still out there, waiting in the wings, ready to sermonize about Archie's doe-eyed greatness.

Nonetheless, Disco Week.  Ugh.  The theme is actually pretty fair, in that it doesn't particularly benefit anyone.  One positive note is that Simon Cowell is going to despise every song that is performed, and his crankiness should provide ample entertainment on Tuesday night.  Adam Lambert should be fine, if he doesn't go too over-the-top.  Lil Rounds will have another shot to succeed in a genre that should ostensibly be up her alley.  I expect another disappointment.  If Allison Iraheta chooses the right song, she could be quite good as well.

As for the other four guys, well, look out.  Things could get ugly.  Anoop Desai, Kris Allen, Danny Gokey and Matt Giraud are not the type of artists you want singing disco.  You know who might be in serious trouble this week (I'm getting all excited just thinking about it)?  Danny Gokey.  Whereas Kris Allen and Matt Giraud have shown the ability to put their own imprint on their performances and arrange songs to their strengths, Danny Gokey has proven to be a wholly unoriginal artist, favoring mimicry over artistry.  He has more or less performed every one of his songs in a straight-forward manner, not straying from the original in any significant way.  If this trend continues, Danny could be a train wreck on Tuesday.  “Danny Gokey Sings Disco” sounds like the opening act for a Color Me Badd concert at Satan's Roadhouse.

Anoop Desai will have similar struggles.  While he's been able to be somewhat original in his arrangements, can he really spin a disco song into something he could perform adequately?  Noop Dog's my guy, and I'm still skeptical.

And, lastly, do you think that Paula's group number will feature drunken wobbling?  I sure hope so.
