Born Alex O'Lachlan in 1977, actor Alex O'Loughlin originated from Australia where he first graced movie screens with his appearance as Jack in Oyster Farmer. The date of his birth appeared differently on several sources, but he confirmed that it was 1977 in a 2008 interview. There were also rumors that his biological father was Scottish-Australian rock musician of rock band AC/DC Bon Scott. This was later proven to be false. The son of a physics and astronomy teacher, O'Loughlin graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Art in 2002.
O'Loughlin's foray into the entertainment industry was via the lead in the film Oyster Farmer. He subsequently appeared in Man-Thing, Feed, and the Australian miniseries The Incredible Journey of Mary Bryant, where he received acting nominations. In 2007, he joined the cast of FX police drama The Shield. He left his role on The Shield once he bagged the lead on the CBS supernatural series Moonlight.
On Moonlight, he portrayed the character Mick St. John. In 2005, O'Loughlin gained popularity after becoming shortlisted for the role of James Bond, eventually losing to Daniel Craig. He confirmed testing for the role but fell short of the mark. Despite Moonlight creating a wide online fan base, reviews were generally negative for the series, once being called a "full-on nightmare." O'Loughlin, meanwhile didn't do as bad, his acting described as "a decent job" and "passable in the lead role."
In 2005, Alex O’Loughlin was nominated for the Australian Film Institute’s “Best Lead Actor in Television” for his performance in The Incredible Journey of Mary Bryant. The next year, he received a nomination for the Logie Awards’ Silver Logie for the same role and category. Since Moonlight, he has acted on films like the film adaptation of the comic book Whiteout, as well as the musical August Rush.
