Following up on an announcement he made late last month about a gay couple moving into Wisteria Lane, Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry reportedly wants to cast professional soccer player David Beckham and singer-songwriter Robbie Williams, saying that the two Brits are “perfect” for the roles and that they would make a “gorgeous” pair.

“David and Robbie are perfect to star as the new neighbors’ best friends; the gorgeous, eccentric couple flown over from Blighty [Britain].  We haven’t had that kind of wow for the wives since Jesse Metcalfe left and we want it to cause such a stir when they turn out to be together,” Cherry said.

He also said that Beckham and Williams have the same look and personality.

“David’s keen, but though the obvious choice was to work with Tom Cruise, we wanted someone who matches him in height and well, Britishness, so Robbie is the one.  They’re both funny, game for a laugh and ridiculously macho, so it should work wonderfully…  the English are pitch-perfect for sending themselves up,” Cherry said.

Based on what Cherry said in July, the new characters of Desperate Housewives will conflict with their neighbor, Susan Mayer (Teri Hatcher).

“They will move into the old Applewhite house and one of the gay men will just have a fractious, hateful relationship with [Susan].  And Susan wants to be so politically correct and show how open-minded she is and she puts her foot in her mouth instantly and it goes downhill from there,” he said.  “I’m basing it a little bit on my relationship with my neighbors.”

It was also in July that Beckham moved to Los Angeles with his family, having signed on to play with the Los Angeles Galaxy soccer team.  Coincidentally, his wife Victoria, more popularly known as Posh Spice, is set to appear in a wedding-themed episode of another ABC hit series, Ugly Betty.

The fourth season of Desperate Housewives will premiere on September 30 at 9/8c on ABC.
