The Vampire Diaries season 3 is almost here, and while Stefan’s journey with Klaus, Elena’s relationship with Damon and Jeremy’s ability to see ghosts are all important stories, Caroline and Tyler have their own drama.

The vampire and the werewolf began an unexpected romance at the end of season 2, and based on the season 3 trailer, they’re still getting it on. But is that all?

The CW has released the official plot descriptions for the first three episodes of The Vampire Diaries season 3, and all include vague references to what Caroline and Tyler will be going through. Here are the highlights from their story.

“The Birthday” (Episode 3.1): “Caroline and Tyler face a new and unexpected challenge.”

“The Hybrid” (Episode 3.2): “Unaware that Caroline is in need of his help, Tyler faces an emotional confrontation with his mother.”

“The End of the Affair” (Episode 3.3): “Tyler is concerned about Caroline and turns to Sheriff Forbes for help.”

What can we learn from these details? Well, obviously their storyline is going to involve their parents and their Romeo and Juliet-style romance, but they also have some serious drama. What is it?

That’s the mystery, but I’ve read enough Vampire Diaries press releases to read between the lines, and I think I have a pretty solid theory. What if Caroline is pregnant?

It’s just speculation, but a bun in the oven would definitely qualify as an “unexpected challenge.” And it would also explain why Tyler is worried about Caroline.

It could also explain the second episode title, “The Hybrid.” Obviously it sounds like Klaus, but what if it’s not? Maybe when Klaus performed the Sacrifice, a magical side effect was that Caroline and Tyler would have another hybrid baby.

Yes, this would inevitably lead to even more comparisons to other vampires shows since Angel did a storyline where Darla was a pregnant vampire, but I still think it could work. A new hybrid would also give Klaus a reason to return to Mystic Falls later in the season, as he would definitely be interested in the existence of a second werevamp.

If I’m wrong, the other theory might be that the “challenge” for Caroline in Tyler is the arrival of her dad. TVLine speculated that Heroes star Jack Coleman is going to play Caroline’s never-before-seen gay dad, and trying to keep him in the dark about his daughter being a vampire who’s dating a werewolf could easily be an unexpected challenge.

Whatever happens, I’m excited to see Caroline and Tyler’s storyline for The Vampire Diaries season 3. Those two characters might get sidelined due to all the important Klaus and Elena and Jeremy drama, but Candice Accola proved in season 2 that she’s one of the most entertaining parts of the show, and the promise of steamy Tyler-Caroline action is definitely something worth watching.

What do you think Caroline and Tyler’s “unexpected challenge” will be?

The Vampire Diaries season 3 premieres Thursday, September 15 at 8pm on the CW.
