The Twilight Saga: New Moon had a really big opening weekend, earning an estimated total of $140.7 million in its first three days in theaters. It was more than twice as much as the grosses of the first film in the Twilight series, which earned $69.6 million when it opened this time last year.

However, New Moon failed to break the record for the most earnings a film took in opening weekend. That record still goes to The Dark Knight, which earned $158.4 million on its opening weekend. New Moon comes in third place of the top 10 best openings of all time, though, and to boot, it’s the only non-summer film to take the honor.

The film also earned an extra $118.1 million overseas, bringing the opening weekend total to $258.8 million across the world.

“Obviously, with the success of Twilight itself, sequels being what they are will generate X-numbers of dollars more, particularly if it’s a satisfying sequel,” Richie Fay, head of distribution for Summit Entertainment, said.

And with the third film in the series, Eclipse, hitting theaters in June next year, one can only wonder whether records will be broken soon.
