The Vampire Diaries is coming to a grand finale but its universe is going to continue on The CW. After The Vampire Diaries takes its final bow on Friday, March 10, its spin-off The Originals will follow exactly a week later Friday, March 17 with its season 4 premiere. Fans have waited a long to find out how, if at all, The Vampire Diaries coming to an end will affect The Originals. According to a recent interview with TVLine with Vampire Diaries showrunner Julie Plec fans will have to keep waiting for quite some time.
Why The Vampire Diaries Doesn’t Need Elena Gilbert>>> Plec stoked the speculation fires herself. Back in February she held a Q&A session about the finale of The Vampire Diaries. When a fan asked if the series finale, or The Originals season 4, would have “Karoline” (AKA the romantic pairing between Caroline Forbes and Klaus Mikaelson) moments, Plec responded “sort of…???”
When pressed by TVLine if the series finale of The Vampire Diaries will connect to The Originals season 4 Plec said, “After you see this finale, and when we get to The Originals‘ finale, that question sort of answers itself. It sets the stage for either the future of The Originals or another piece of The Vampire Diaries universe. Whether we get the opportunity to go down that road, I have no idea. But it definitely opens the door for a nice iteration of the two worlds.”
Given those comments, it sounds like something might be set up for a future blending of the worlds with The Originals season 4 finale. Presumably The Originals will have its own season 4 storyline to deal with before getting to this point but it sounds like the season 4 finale will have some kind of cliffhanger that directly links The Vampire Diaries and The Originals. Judging from Plec’s comments it seems like The Originals season 5 could have a blending of Vampire Diaries and Originals characters or yet another spin-off or sequel series could be in the works.

Luckily fans won’t have to wait that long for some interplay. As was previously reported, actor Matt Davis, who plays Alaric on The Vampire Diaries, will guest star on The Originals season 4. Davis will appear in the tail end of the shortened The Originals season 4 in episode 8. Perhaps he is showing up to set up whatever obvious Vampire Diaries link there will be in the season 4 finale.
So what do you think and hope is going to happen? Would you like to see Vampire Diaries characters continue onto The Originals? Would you watch another spin-off? Will you be watching The Originals season 4 now?
The series finale of The Vampire Diaries will air Friday, March 10 at 8/7c on The CW. The Originals season 4 will premiere Friday, March 17 at 8/7c on The CW. Want more news? Like our Originals Facebook page for the latest updates!
