Jerrika Hinton has played Dr. Edwards since season 9 of the ABC hospital drama, but will not be back for season 14 this Fall. The actress is reportedly gearing up for a starring role in an upcoming HBO drama series by Alan Ball (creator of True Blood and Six Feet Under). Hinton will play the role of Ashley, who was adopted by a multi-racial family called the Bishops, says Extra.

This marks her second expected departure from Grey’s, the first being last spring when she was cast in a later-cancelled project by Shonda Rhimes, a comedy pilot called Toast. The story details for how Dr. Edwards will make her exit have not yet been revealed. While it would be great for her departure on the show to be amicable and left open for guest appearances, Shonda Rhimes is no stranger to killing off characters and shutting that door.
