Are fans of CBS’ How I Met Your Mother about to meet, well, mother?

TV Guide‘s Michael Ausiello is reporting that Alicia Silverstone has been cast in a multi-episode arc.  Apparently, sources have confirmed that the 31-year-old actress, known most for her portrayal of rich teen Cher Horowitz in the 1995 comedy Clueless, is set to play a doctor who becomes Ted’s (Josh Radnor) love interest.  No word yet on when Silverstone will first appear on the show.

For those who are unfamiliar with How I Met Your Mother, the CBS comedy series is a retrospective look at the title character’s search for his soulmate.  The show has yet to reveal who the “mother” in the title is, although producers assure that her identity will be made known to viewers before the series ends.

Silverstone’s character is the latest addition to the list of potential soulmates that the show has presented.  Over the course of the series, Radnor’s Ted has dated several women, most notably Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders) and Victoria (Ashley Williams).  Both female characters, however, have already ended their relationship with Ted, and show co-creator Craig Thomas has discounted the possibility that Smulders’ Robin is the mysterious mother.

Silverstone’s How I Met Your Mother stint will be her first appearance in a television series since starring in the short-lived comedy series, Miss Match.  Silverstone had signed on to do another comedy for NBC, but the show – called The Singles Table – was cancelled before it even hit airwaves.

When How I Met Your Mother returns to continue its third season on Monday, March 17, it will fill the network’s 8:30pm timeslot, which previously belonged to The Big Bang Theory.  Consequently, The Big Bang Theory will air 30 minutes earlier.

How I Met Your Mother has nine post-strike episodes left to complete the season, although CBS has yet to renew it for another year.
