Agents of SHIELD might have started slow in season one, but by the end of the show’s freshmen year viewers were on the edge of their seats. The first season was full of action, adventure, heartbreak, and romance. It was also full of questions and mysteries left unanswered.

What language was Agent Coulson writing on the wall? How will SHIELD operate now that it’s under attack from all sides? Can Ward be redeemed? Should he? And just what is going on with Skye? Who are her parents and what powers does she have?

We have a million questions, but thankfully we were on hand at San Diego Comic Con 2014 to ask the executive producers of Agents of SHIELD just a few. While the group was tight-lipped about what’s to come (as usual with Marvel) we did get them to spill a few secrets for the season ahead.

‘Agents of SHIELD’ Interview: Chloe Bennet and Brett Dalton Discuss Ward’s Dark Turn and Season 2

Watch the video interview with executive producers Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen and check below for highlights:

Interview Highlights:

  • The government is not happy with SHIELD. “I’d say they’re a target.”
  • “It’s something we’re going to explore this season. Being an underdog and what it’s like to be driven underground. Coulson is tasked with rebuilding something that’s entirely falling apart.”
  • They’re thrilled going into season two, it’s nice to have a big and clear enemy. Plus now they can say Hydra all the time!
  • They like exploring the team as underdogs. In season one they were part of an organization with a lot of shiny resources at their disposal. Now they don’t have those resources and that’s a very interesting journey.
  • What will happen with Grant this year? Will there be redemption? “He’s a clear villain,” Tancharoen said. She mentions that in season one Ward had done a lot of bad things.
  • “He’s a valuable resource,” Tancharoen said. How he relates to the team is up in the air.
  • “Everyone has a reason for being the way they are,” Whedon said. We’ll get a little bit more of an insight into the man that Ward is in season two.

‘Agents of SHIELD’ Cast Interviews: Clark Gregg, Elizabeth Henstridge, and Iain De Caestecker Tease Season 2

Not enough Agents of SHIELD scoop? Watch the video interview with executive producers Jeffrey Bell and Jeph Loeb, and check out interview highlights below:

Interview Highlights:

  • If they have a cool story for Nick Fury, Maria Hill, or one of the movie characters they’ll make it happen and talk to the movie people. They’re in an interesting situation with two TV shows and the expanding Marvel universe.
  • They left last season with Coulson getting a directive to “Make it work.”
  • Agent Carter will enable them to go back to the beginning and see why it was necessary to have a SHIELD in the first place. They’ll have two different shows that can echo each other thematically.
  • All that really matters is whether we care about the characters and are we invested in them?
  • The show didn’t have the benefit of 50 or 75 years of characters running around. Instead the show had the talented Clark Gregg and five brand new characters. Yet the audience cares about these characters.
  • Comic book character Mockingbird will show up this season on Agents of SHIELD. In the comics she had a romance with Hawkeye, but they evade answering about her potential love life by saying she has to show up first.
  • Hunter from the comics will also be visiting the show. “With SHIELD being so scattered there’s actually room for us to bring in a lot of other people to come and go and visit us. It’s going to be fun.”

What do you think? Are you excited about seeing Mockingbird and Hunter? Do you think Ward will be redeemed? What are you most looking forward to in season two? Sound off in the comments!
