Buffy‘s breakout character Spike will find new light on the Battlestar Galactica prequel Caprica, albeit not as a vampire, but as Barnabus Greely, an enigmatic and dangerous leader in the monotheist world. The character’s still pretty dark, though.

James Marsters, who played the punk vampire on Buffy for the better part of 1997 to 2003, will join the cast of Caprica on March 5. In between, Masters has appeared on Angel (of course), Smallville, Torchwood, Numb3rs, and Lie to Me.

Meanwhile, in potentially distressing news, the premiere episode of Caprica reeled in a disappointing 1.6 million viewers, way below the averages for Battlestar Galactica and Stargate: Universe. It is, of course, important to note that some 2 million fans have already sampled the Caprica pilot, as it has been made available online and via DVD.

In this case, figures for the second episode this Friday should be more telling.
