GLAAD Applauds 'Brothers & Sisters' for Gay Storyline

brothers & sistersScotty Wandell (Luke Macfarlane) and Kevin Walker (Matthew Rhys) have come a long way since they first met.  What started out as a professional relationship between a lawyer and a key witness has eventually budded into a romantic affair that has endured many storms.  In the most recent episode of Brothers & Sisters, the gay couple has decided to take the next big step in their relationship as Kevin proposed and Scotty said yes.

Although homosexual relationships aren't prohibited on TV, only a number of shows have incorporated gay romantic scenes in their storylines.  And because of this, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) compliments Brothers & Sisters and its home network ABC for giving importance to Kevin and Scotty's love story.

"We applaud ABC for highlighting Kevin and Scotty's declaration of commitment to each other in the presence of their family and friends," GLAAD president Neil G. Giuliano said about the historic event. "Kevin and Scotty's ceremony reflects the ongoing commitment of Brothers & Sisters and ABC to making visible the multi-dimensional lives of gay characters."

On Sunday, May 11, millions of viewers will tune into the season finale of Brothers & Sisters, which will feature the wedding of the gay couple.  This will stand as a first of its kind ceremony between series regular characters on U.S. broadcast network television.  Considering what happens when this family gets together for a party it should be must-see television.

In line with this, GLAAD, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and ensuring fair, accurate and inclusive representation of people and events in the media, is encouraging the media to use this momentous television event as an opportunity to explore how a ceremonial wedding like Kevin and Scotty's does not provide gay couples with the legal protections that straight married couples have.

Fans can catch Brothers & Sisters this Sunday at 10/9 on ABC.
