Matthew Gray Gubler directed the Criminal Minds episode, “Mr. Scratch,” so you know this is going to be one of the scarier episodes with plenty of creepy visuals. Is the BAU really looking at a case involving mind control?

When three people implicated in murders claim they were attacked by a “clawed shadow monster” at the moment each crime occurred, the BAU searches for an UnSub who is controlling their minds. That search puts one of the team in jeopardy.

Watch the “Mr. Scratch” promo:

This UnSub is “creating killers, murder by proxy,” Rossi realizes. He preys upon his victims’ darkest fears — and he’s going to try to get into Hotch’s head and make him do what he says. “I’m about to come through that front door,” the UnSub tells him as the rest of the team approaches the house. “Kill me.” Is Hotch going to shoot at his own team?

Check out a sneak peek as the team figures out what the UnSub is doing:

While everyone usually has a different childhood fear, the victims each saw the same thing: a “dark figure,” later described as ‘a shadow monster with talons for hands.” “That level of specificity says it’s not just a childhood nightmare,” Hotch explains. “It’s something they actually experienced, though they were too young to understand what it was.” The UnSub has them recall a memory from childhood to make them kill as adults, but how do they prove it?

If it’s on TV — especially if it’s a procedural or superhero show — chances are Meredith watches it. She has a love for all things fiction, starting from a young age with ER and The X-Files on the small screen and the Nancy Drew books. Arrow kicked off the Arrowverse and her true passion for all things heroes. She’s enjoyed getting into the minds of serial killers since Criminal Minds, so it should be no surprise that her latest obsession is Prodigal Son.
