We all know the story.  Sandra Oh’s character on Grey’s Anatomy, Cristina Yang, was affected by the behind-the-scenes scandal involving her on-screen beau Isaiah Washington.  ABC and Shonda Rhimes decided to eviscerate Washington from the cast and therefore end the on-screen relationship between his Dr. Preston Burke and Cristina.  The final episode of Grey’s Anatomy’s third season ended with the botched marriage of those characters and Cristina is going to find herself alone at the outset of season 4.  So, where does she go from here?

In case you were wondering how the Preston/Cristina story will be resolved without Washington, we have some spoilery info for you.  If you don’t want to be spoiled, skip to the next paragraph.  Cristina is still going to attend her planned honeymoon, with Meredith taking Preston’s spot.  When the two get back, Preston will be gone.  Simple as that.  Cristina is going to have to start over.

Cristina has been with Preston for most of the series and, now alone, it’ll be interesting to see how this alters the course of that character and where Shonda and company will take her.  Will the failed wedding open her up, make her more personable?  Or, will Cristina crawl into a shell and be more bitchy than ever?  I don’t think there’s an in-between there.  It’s either/or.  And, I don’t think either is out of character.

I’ve read spoilers for the first few episodes and nowhere does it give any hints as to where Cristina’s love life will go.  Of course, they may take it easy on Cristina for a good part of the season and let her recover before putting her back on the market.  This is actually the most sensible thing.  But, when she does make herself available, is there anyone in the current cast who Cristina could likely knock boots with?  I don’t know if there is.

It’s one of the many questions, important ones, that the writers of Grey’s Anatomy are facing going into a big, transitional season.  After a lackluster second half to the third season, Grey’s is going to have to step it up big time to keep their loyal fan base happy.
