When Helio Castroneves was added to the roster of stars on this season of Dancing with the Stars, many fans of the show thought to themselves, “Who?”

After all, while NASCAR racing’s popularity has exploded over recent years, and NASCAR stars like Jeff Gordon have become the spokespeople for national brands, IndyCar racing hasn’t quite reached that same level…yet.

But thanks to Helio’s wide-ranging exposure on Dancing with the Stars, that might change, and his recent second appearance on People’s yearly list of “Sexiest Man Alive” can only help.

Helio appeared on the list once before in 2001, but now with the additional fanbase he is developing through Dancing with the Stars, his new appearance will certainly get a lot more traction. He’s named the “Sexiest Speed Demon,” and says he appreciates the nod from the magazine.

“It’s such an honor to be a part of the ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ issue,” he said. “I can’t tell you what a compliment it is to be thought of as sexy. I understand that my role on Dancing with the Stars has gotten me noticed by an entirely new audience, but it’s also nice to know that going 200 mph for a living is also considered a glamorous job. It’s fun to be recognized not only for my career racing cars, but also my moves on the dance floor! ”

His fellow racers – even those on the NASCAR side – are cheering him on. And, Helio adds, “More importantly, they’re voting.” “It’s great when you hear Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Mark Martin calling you and saying, ‘We’re all supporting you and we’re here watching you every Monday.’ It’s fun to have this kind of friendship and this kind of support.”

Helio has made it to the final four on the show. Do you think he’s got what it take to come in first?
