When the new trailer for The Twilight Saga: New Moon is only the third most-talked about event from the MTV Video Music Awards, you know the show was great. I tune in every year and have been severely disappointed for the last couple of VMAs. Britney’s “comeback” was a dud and the Jonas Brothers don’t belong at an event like this.
But the 2009 VMAs were a breath of fresh air, with controversy courtesy of Kanye West, a swell of support and love for Taylor Swift, and Lady Gaga stepping out and becoming the most awesomely crazy person in the entertainment industry, taking over the title from Bjork and Bai Ling.
The night got off to a wacky start when Taylor Swift won the award for Best Female Video and was interrupted by Kanye West, who claimed Beyonce deserved to win for “Single Ladies.” Yes, he acted like a total “gay fish,” but I’m siding with my boy Kanye on this one.
First, I’m not entirely certain it was genuine. It was clearly a lampoon of the time he did the same thing at the European VMAs a few years ago.
Second, the only thing it did was help Swift. Not only did the audience boo Kanye, they went on to cheer Taylor’s name later in the ceremony and, at the end when Beyonce finally won, she gave her time to Taylor. Kanye interrupting her was the best thing that could’ve happened to Taylor Swift.
Third, he has a point. How can “Single Ladies” be the Video of the Year but not win Best Female Video? That’s like a baseball team losing the playoffs but somehow winning the World Series. While it was probably inadvertent, Kanye showed the fraudulent awarding practices of MTV, which only sought to give as many different performers awards to appeal to a broader audience. Because, let’s be honest, “Single Ladies” is an iconic, brilliant music video that really did deserve to win every single category.
Going Goo Goo for Gaga
On a more upbeat note, Lady Gaga still managed to steal the whole damn show and break out as the next big star for MTV. Russell Brand made repeated jokes about her alleged hermaphroditism and his desire to have sex with her. Then she decided to wear about 75 different cockamamie outfits during the ceremony, including a piece of red lace that covered her entire head.
And to top it all off, she delivered what I maintain is the single greatest VMA performance of the last five years. She started off by pretending to be crushed by a chandelier and proceeded to rock out in a ridiculously skimpy outfit, go crazy on a piano and then simulate her own death in a bloody and gruesome fashion.
In other words, it was pure awesome. Plus, when she won the Best New Artist award, she thanked both God and the gays in a single breath, which is a brilliant and confusing mixture. Lady Gaga reigned supreme.
