She grew up in Three Hills, Alberta, and upon completing her secondary education, relocated to Vancouver, British Columbia with the intention of pursuing an acting career. Back in Canada, she received more acting training and eventually started appearing in commercial and television series.
Prior to her being cast in the role of Lois Lane in WB hit series, Smallville, Durance had already done a good number of television shows, which include The Chris Isaak Show,
Tru Calling , Andromeda, 111 Gramercy Park, The Collector and
Stargate SG-1 . She had also appeared in Lifetime's made-for-tv movie, Stranded. Durance has also begun to build a career in the film industry, having portrayed Julie Miller in the 2006 sequel, The Butterfly Effect 2, and Johanna in the 2003 horror flick, House of the Dead. In the latter, Durance was credited as Erica Parker; the surname belongs to her ex-husband, whom she divorced in 1999.
As a cast member of Smallville, Durance was introduced to the viewers during the show's fourth season, where she was only credited as a guest actor. She joined the regular cast of the show the following season. A poll taken by the series Attack of the Show showed that Durance was considered as the Best Lois Lane. Of her character's initial relationship with the young Clark Kent, Durance said, “You have two people that have been together before and then a third person comes in. They haven't written that I am suddenly there and a romantic lead. There is a little bit of weirdness, but they've given Lana a place where she is changing and growing. I think it hasn't gone to the classic triangle where everyone is jealous. At this point, with the brief meetings I have had with Lana and Clark, it would be unnatural.”
At present, she is married to Canadian actor David Palffy, whom she met while filming House of the Dead. They were wed on January 8, 2005.
