Season 5 of The Voice begins with the blind auditions tonight, and we have a sneak peek of one of the contestants, who’ll surely be an early favorite.

Take a look at Matthew Schuler performing Young the Giant’s “Cough Syrup.”

All four coaches turn around at the same time — though Adam is a split second early in pushing his button — in less than 11 seconds of Matthew opening his mouth. He begins the song a capella and undoubtedly gets the coaches with the little run he does on the word “run.”

In season 3, Melanie Martinez also performed this song, but I like Matthew’s version better. He reminds me of a male version of last season’s Caroline Glaser with a bigger range. He can be soft and tender, and then powerful when he needs to be.

The coaches try to make themselves stand out as Christina follows Adam’s lead and stands up on her chair to give Matthew an ovation, while Blake goes up to him for a high-five. Christina, who’s just following the leader, apparently, also goes up to Matthew to give him a hug.

Blake’s pitch implies that if Matthew joins his team, he’ll get lucky with his wife, Miranda, because, yes, this show is about Blake’s sex life. All Cee Lo can say is that Matthew’s voice is beautiful and that he should want to be an owner of a team with him, rather than be a member of a team with Blake. What?

Meanwhile, Adam can’t even sit still. We’ve seen in the past that when he wants a singer, he will throw everything he can at him/her and really sell himself. We’ve also seen him be unsuccessful. Christina tries to convince Matthew by saying he can deliver the first female coach victory and uses her leave of absence to her advantage because she’s refreshed.

Getting four coaches to turn around only adds to the pressure, and he/she can potentially become overhyped (like last season’s Judith Hill, who also had her blind audition video released before the season began). Season 4’s winner, Danielle Bradbery, had three coaches press their buttons.

We don’t see who Matthew ultimately picks, but vote for who he should go with below! (For the record, he should pick Adam.)

The Voice season 5 premieres tonight at 8pm on NBC.
