Will the audience bite into yet another vampire-themed series?  Perhaps banking on the success of the Twilight saga, the CW is set to launch Vampire Diaries, a television adaptation of bestselling books courtesy of Scream and Dawson’s Creek‘s Kevin Williamson.  The network apparently has high hopes for the upcoming series, pairing it with Supernatural on Thursday nights, replacing Smallville.  Wait, two shows featuring two brothers one after the other?

The Vampire Diaries follows a dark love triangle with Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) right smack in the middle of a competition between two vampire brothers – one good, one evil – Stefan and Damon Salvatore (Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder).  Wesley, 26, said the CW bigwigs are hoping Vampire Diaries will help the network reel in a bigger female demographic.

“As everybody knows, chicks dig the vampires,” he said.

Judging from the teaser trailer, Vampire Diaries will have the characters literally writing on their diaries. Conflicted Elena, for instance, writes, “Dear diary, Today will be different.  It has to be. I will smile and it will be believable.  The smile will say, I’m fine, thank you. Yes much better. I will no longer be the girl who lost her parents.  I will start fresh.  Be someone new.  It’s the only way I’ll make it through.”

In another clip, the two brothers are seen fighting over Elena, with Somerhalder’s Damon (the bad vampire) wanting her because she reminded him of a certain Katherine. Stefan (the good vampire) proceeds to tackle him and miss, and Stefan makes it clear that he really is the good guy. “I’m simply not able to resist her …  I had a plan.  I wanted to change who I was.  Create a life with someone new,” he writes for his part on his own diary.
