Though Castiel and Misha Collins have been on Supernatural for years, very little is known about the character’s past. Castiel has been a fan favorite since nearly his first episode all the way back in season 4. Since then bits and pieces of the angel’s long backstory have come out as he has become more and more involved in the Winchesters’ adventures. Fans are always wanting to see more and they might get their wish. According to Entertainment Weekly, the upcoming season 12 will see another bit of Castiel’s past leak out as another Castiel-centric episode is coming to the series.

12 Socially Awkward Cas Moments from Supernatural We Can All Relate To >>> The focus on Castiel comes from a new plan to plot the season out by Andrew Dabb. Dabb, who has been a writer on Supernatural since season 4, is the show’s latest showrunner. Dabb has some interesting plans on how to shake up the series following the big events of season 11 with God and his sister, Amara.

According to Dabb season 12 will be much more personal and less climatic/about the end of all Creation like season 11. “It’s about telling smaller stories that impact more of our characters,” Dabb explained. “For example, this year, especially toward the middle of the season, we’re using Castiel in stand-alone episodes in a way that he hasn’t been used in a long time.”

One episode in particular, episode 12 of season 12, will be Castiel-centric. Dabb said, “That’s very heavily about Castiel and the journey he’s been on, some things from his past that we’re not aware of are getting brought to light.”

Rick Springfield Talks About His Role as the New Lucifer on Supernatural >>>

Taking things in a much more personal direction seems to be the right move for Supernatural. The show is at its best when it is exploring the relationships between the central characters and it is less successful with the big end-of-the-world plots. Since there is so much history to mine with Castiel given his long past, it’s a good move to bring a tighter focus on everyone’s favorite angel. The time is especially right since season 11 saw Castiel become the vessel for Lucifer.

But what do you think? Are you excited that season 12 will use Castiel in new ways? Are you looking forward to more episodes about the angel’s past? Does a more intimate season 12 sound like the right move for the series?

Supernatural season 12 premieres Thursday, October 13 at 9pm on the CW.
