It’s difficult enough trying to guess what’s to come in the remainder of Lost‘s fourth season, but the men behind the scenes already have an idea what will happen in seasons 5 and 6 of the hit ABC series. Lost showrunners Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse recently spoke to the New York Post, where they gave a few details about what fans can expect in the final two years of the show. They also discussed what inspired them to set an end date for the series, and teased an episode later this season that will wrap up significant mysteries.
While it’s unknown just how much of seasons 5 and 6 is already planned, Damon Lindelof confirms that the general ideas are already set in place. “Season 4 is about who gets off the island and the fact that they need to get back,” he points out. “Season 5 is about why they need to get back, and season 6 is about what happens when they get back.”
This three year plan to completely wrap up the show sounds extremely exciting. Personally, I’m most interested in what happens after the Oceanic Six get back to the island. As for why they return, the most obvious answer seems to be that they left people behind.
The showrunners also claimed that author J.K. Rowling gave them the inspiration to wrap the series up after 6 seasons. “When we heard her say that she was only writing seven [Harry Potters], we were inspired,” says Lindelof. “Franchise shows like Grey’s Anatomy don’t need to have a beginning, middle and end. They can bring in new doctors, nurses and patients, but shows like ours need to have a place to go.”
The article also confirms that Lost will air seven episodes before taking a break, then return on April 24 with episodes eight through thirteen. “There will be very significant mysteries answered in the seventh episode,” Cuse teases. “The eighth episode is non-traditional and the start of something new.”
One of my favorite aspects of Lost is the way they’re willing to break outside the box and confound viewers’ expectations with new and unique storytelling techniques. It sounds like episode eight will do that yet again, but in what way? There’s simply no way to know what this show will throw at you next. Unless, of course, you’re one of the writers.
