I knew it! I so knew that the sexual chemistry between Shannon Elizabeth and Derek Hough wasn’t fabricated for the benefit of their rumba last night on Dancing with the Stars.

It’s part of the nature of ballroom dancing to include fiery, sexy chemistry, but these dancers are professionals and they are very good at making it up when the occasion calls for it. However, on occasion, real sparks do fly and ignite some real romance. Just on Dancing with the Stars, for example, we have two confirmed romances, Mario Lopez and Karina Smirnoff from season 3, Sabrina Bryan and Mark Ballas from season 5. Now, it’s American Pie actress Shannon Elizabeth and cutie pie dancer Derek Hough’s turn to make headlines in the gossip magazines.

Derek, 22, decided that Shannon, who is 12 years his senior, needed to work on her hip action for the rumba they were to perform in week 6, so he brought her a hula hoop to practice swinging her hips. You know, you can hula hoop anywhere, but the pair decided to take their rehearsal to a very romantic beach in Malibu. There, they were spotted cuddling together, and that cuddle turned into an honest-to-goodness kiss.

The two have been extremely friendly all season, often seen backstage with their hands all over each other. I didn’t hear about their kiss until a few moments ago, but I swear that last night, their backstage demeanor turned the corner into a full-on romance. (You can see for yourself in my recap of the Top 7 Performances – I totally speculated that they might be a couple now.)

After their performance last night, Shannon and Derek are in danger of being eliminated tonight. They ended the night tied for second-to-last with Jason Taylor and Edyta Sliwinska with 24 points apiece, above only Marlee Matlin and Fabian Sanchez, who scored a 21 out of 30. Don’t miss the Dancing with the Stars results show tonight. We’ll not only find out who will be going home, but we might even learn more details about Shannon and Derek’s relationship.
