Looking for a Holiday gift that says “I support bad-assery of the highest order?”  If so, you can’t go wrong with 24 and Jack Bauer, the expertly portrayed sometime government/sometimes rogue agent who will do anything to thwart terrorists on US soil.  The 24: Season 6 DVD hit the shelves today, just in time for holiday shopping.  While the sixth season of 24 is generally regarded as the series’ worst, Jack Bauer is still Jack Bauer, which is reason enough to pick up the DVD set.  And, with season 7 of 24 delayed indefinitely thanks to the on going writers’ strike, maniacal 24 fans are probably going to need the sixth season to help them through the wait until season 7.

Historically, I think season 6 will be looked back on more favorably than it is now.  Sure, the season had its fair share of egregious creative mistakes and miscues, but there were still some great moments. Unfortunately, most of these moments occurred early in the season.  Jack shooting Curtis in the neck was definitely shocking, as was the detonation of the nuke in Valencia.  But, my favorite early season moment from season 6 had to be Jack’s vampire bite kill.  No one else but Jack Bauer would kill a terrorist by biting them on the neck.  That’s what 20 months in a Chinese prison will do to you, I suppose.

The season 6 DVD for 24 is loaded with special features.  Documentaries, behind the scenes featurettes, you name it, the DVD has it.  The most impressive part of the DVD set, at least to me, is the sheer amount of episode commentaries it contains.  Most episodes have a commentary involving cast or crew and almost all of the principal cast members are involved on at least one commentary (my favorite: Jean Smart and Gregory Itzin team up for one episode).
