In exactly one week from now, The Vampire Diaries returns with a brand new episode that will uncover some starling clues to Mystic Falls’ past. To shed light on “Bloodlines,” the 11th episode of the series, executive producers Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson talk about what fans can look forward to.

Basically, Plec and Williamson, who also wrote the episode, reveal that The Vampire Diaries will be taking a slightly different direction when it returns on January 21. “We leave mystic falls a little while…There’s a little surprise for the audience that comes near the end of the episode,” Plec says, adding that fans will finally learn the real reason why Stefan is in Mystic Falls, how he came to be in town and how he came to meet Elena. It’s “a nice call back to the beginning of their relationship and it’s good stuff.”
