Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag are wholly deserving of one another.  I say this as someone who is not a rabid fan of The Hills, and as someone who has mostly been fed my Speidi news via Joel McHale on The Soup.  Still, I feel I have a pretty good read on the what these crazy kids bring to the table, and it is not very much.  They clearly love their attention, are paparazzi whores, so the story that has been broken by Perez Hilton today makes a lot of sense.  There are unconfirmed reports that Spencer and Heidi have eloped during a romantic getaway to Mexico.  Whether it’s true or not, this will provide ample gossip fodder for those who seek it, and it will keep Spencer and Heidi in the news for the time being.  The two have been engaged for some time, though last year Heidi briefly called off the engagement.

If this is true, and the two are now married, that’s just fine.  Again, these two reality stars deserve each other.  They are famous for being on The Hills, and besides that have done absolutely nothing noteworthy in their lives.  The Hills is a show that, if you’d never heard of it or seen it before, would defy explanation.  The Hills is like The Real World, except every single scene is faked.  But it’s still kind of reality.  Spencer and Heidi are not all that popular among any group of viewers.  I’ve never come across anyone who genuinely likes the pair.  Nonetheless, their fame remains palpable, despite the two not doing anything besides pose for paparazzi.

The other side to this story is that the Montag family and the Pratt family were kept in the dark and knew nothing of the marriage, if it did indeed occur.  I assume this is just another in a long line of PR ploys by the dastardly couple, who seek nothing more than the attention of the media.  I can see them, together in Mexico, upset that cameramen aren’t following them everywhere and wondering “How can we get some attention while out of the country?  Let’s get married.”  And, so it was done.

Recently, Hills co-star Audrina Partridge confirmed that there would be a fifth season of The Hills sometime in the near future.  I guess one of the main story-lines next season could be Spencer and Heidi getting used to married life.  However, I can’t imagine it will be much of a transition.  They weren’t doing anything of worth beforehand, and I suspect they’ll continue to do nothing of worth post-marriage.
