In the aftermath of Professor Martin Stein collapsing at Star Labs, the team sets out to find him a new match to replace the deceased Ronnie Raymond’s role as Firestorm. Grant Gustin, Victor Garber and Franz Drameh discuss The Flash Season 2 Episode 4, “The Fury of Firestorm.”

“Stein starts to kind of  have withdrawals from not having the connection anymore and we need to find someone to pair him with to make his body whole again,” says Gustin on The Flash set in Vancouver.”

“We’re trying to find a compatible match, but he’s declining quickly and things don’t go as smoothly as everyone would like them to go.  We have some options though. We have a couple options, it’s not like we have to go with this guy, but it does come down to that in the end. There are a couple Firestorm options and there are some fun scenes with those guys.”

“The shock for all of us– we didn’t know that he wouldn’t exist without being able to be conjoined with another person because of his metabolic problem,” said Garber. “That’s the big reveal [in Episode 4].”

The “dynamic will be different” with Jax than it was with Ronnie. Garber finds “it’s completely challenging and fun to play.”

“There’s a lot of back-and-forth. It’s that whole sort of love-hate relationship between the two,” Drameh elaborates on this new partnership between the two. “Jax does not want to be a hero. He does not want these powers, but at the end of the day when it comes down to it, he has to set up and embrace it and do his job.”

“[Jax] is an ex-high school athlete working as a mechanic. He’s very different from Ronnie Raymond.  … He doesn’t necessarily want the power and in that respect he won’t abuse it.”
