Supernatural is ending season 12 with a double dose of action, a two-hour finale on Thursday, May 18 (aka the due date for Lucifer’s baby). The CW has released the official synopses for the last two hours, revealing that the Winchesters will be battling two dangerous enemies on two different fronts.

In the first hour, titled “Who We Are,” “the fight between the American Hunters and the British Hunters comes to a head.” It seems likely that the season-long conflict with the British Men of Letters will wrap up within the first hour, but there may be casualties.

The synopsis also reveals that Sam and Dean are in a dangerous situation and “only have each other to rely on.” Why do they only have each other? The May 11 episode, titled “There’s Something About Mary,” promises a showdown between Mary Winchester and the returning Lady Toni Bevell, which might be cause for concern that Mary won’t survive the season.

Can We Trust Castiel’s Vision of the Future?>>>

The second hour of the finale, “All Along the Watchtower,” only offers up one sentence for the description: “Lucifer battles Sam, Dean and Castiel for control of his unborn child.” That is certainly a big showdown with an even bigger episode title.

“All Along the Watchtower” carries a lot of weight with it, both in terms of the Bob Dylan song’s lyrics and its connection to TV. The song is probably most commonly associated with Battlestar Galactica, where it was used as an anthem to awaken the secret Cylons. And back in September it was sung by Tom Ellis’ titular character on the FOX drama Lucifer, which is either an amusing coincidence or an in-joke from the writers.

Whatever the case, Supernatural fans can expect to see showdowns with both the British Men of Letters and Lucifer in the season 12 finale.

And if the show’s pattern continues, something new and scary will be unleashed in the finale cliffhanger (most likely Lucifer’s baby). For odd-numbered seasons, the finale finds one or both Winchesters in grave danger, but even-numbered seasons always release a new Big Bad. Check it out:

Season 1: Sam, Dean and John are in a car accident
Season 3: Dean goes to Hell
Season 5: Sam jumps into the Cage
Season 7: Dean and Cas go to Purgatory
Season 9: Dean becomes a demon
Season 11: Sam gets shot and kidnapped

Season 2: The Devil’s Gate opens
Season 4: Lucifer is freed
Season 6: Cas becomes God
Season 8: The angels fall
Season 10: The Darkness comes

The pattern is real, which means season 12 will definitely end with something big and powerful showing up.

Supernatural airs Thursdays at 8/7c on the CW.
