If you watched the Supernatural season 8 premiere, you may have noticed an important absence — Misha Collins‘ character of Castiel was nowhere to be seen. What does this mean for Castiel’s future on Supernatural? Will he be back? Is he still in Purgatory? Why is he there at all?

On a recent visit to the set of Supernatural (courtesy of Warner Bros.), we talked to Misha Collins about Castiel and the direction of season 8. Watch the video here.

WARNING: Although he self-censored a lot during this interview, Misha Collins may have still given away a few Supernatural season 8 spoilers. You need to watch out for those. Or, if they really bother you, don’t watch at all.

I suppose the biggest spoiler of all is that Misha Collins was around the Supernatural set at all. On the other hand, there are a lot of flashbacks in Supernatural season 8. He may have been present for one of those. It’s kind of hard to say, and (unfortunately) this video does not give anything away on that front.

But you can learn a little more about what Castiel was doing in Purgatory — and a little more about why he was not with Dean the whole time.

Take a look at the video below:

Sorry about the jerky camera. The camera person (me) is an inexperienced hack in that department. But what are some of the highlights of this video interview?

  • You’ve got to love how even Misha Collins wasn’t sure whether or not he was in the season 8 premiere episode. He wasn’t, right?
  • So Castiel is down in Purgatory to atone for his past sins? I guess Purgatory is the place to do it.
  • Misha Collins is a much happier person than Castiel.

What do you think happened to Castiel in Purgatory? Do you think he will reunite with the boys in season 8? Will he be OK? Do you care? Leave your comments below!

Supernatural season 8 airs — with or without Misha Collins — Wednesdays at 9pm on The CW.
