Many know Ana Ortiz as Hilda Suarez on Ugly Betty, but the singer-actress also tried out for another pivotal character in the series: Hilda’s fashion-challenged but lovable younger sister.

“I was super plain.  I just put on some glasses and kept my hair kind of flat and layered on the clothing,” Ortiz told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette‘s Patricia Sheridan, describing what she wore when she was auditioning for the role of Betty.

Despite her efforts to “ugly up,” Ortiz said that she knew she was not right for the role.

“My objective was mainly to go in there and give a really good audition because I was so excited about the project,” she explained.  “I just wanted them to remember me, so that I could be involved in the future.”

So, the role of Betty went to actress America Ferrera, and Ana Ortiz was tasked to play Hilda.  The casting turned out well for both actresses, with Ferrera earning Emmy and SAG Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, and Ortiz winning an ALMA Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Television Series, Mini-Series or Television Movie.

Starring in Ugly Betty has done much to boost Ortiz’ popularity and celebrity status, but the actress is certain she will not become a diva.

“I have a really strong support system of family and friends who put me in check really quick whenever I start to act up,” she said.  “So I don’t have any fear that it will be a problem.”

Things have been looking up for her personal life, as well.  Last summer, she tied the knot with musician Noah Lebenzon in Rincon, Puerto Rico.

“My husband is really understanding,” Ana Ortiz said, “and my family couldn’t be more supportive.  My mother was always worried but definitely believed in me and supported me.”
