Once Upon a Time‘s inventive and original musical episode ended with an old trope of the series. As Emma and Hook finally exchanged wedding vows, another dark curse hit the town and crashed the nuptials. Even the most diehard of Once Upon a Time fans might be losing track of all the curses that have hit the characters now. In a recent interview with TVLine the cast and crew of the series promised that while a curse is familiar territory, the show would be trying for something different with the latest iteration.

Jennifer Morrison Is Leaving Once Upon a Time After Season 6>>> The major difference is that this particular curse will be less about the curse itself. Once Upon a Time executive producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowtiz explained that the curse was more about setting the stage for the final battle than being anything new. “We’re well aware that we’ve done a curse ‘occasionally in the past,'” Kitsis explained, “but this time we’re trying to do a little twist on it.”

Horowitz added, “It was less about thinking of it as a curse and thinking about it as, ‘What is the Final Battle?’ We had a concept for what this Final Battle would be and we kind of worked backwards from that. That led to this curse that you saw [at the end of a ‘The Song in Your Heart.’]”

The producers aren’t the only ones hyping the curse and the subsequent Final Battle. Once Upon a Time‘s Snow White and Prince Charming, Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas, also promised that the season 6 finale would be bigger than any season finale that has preceded it. “What broke the very first season’s curse was a kiss — very pure, unromantic true love expressed between mother and son. The love that it takes in the finale … I feel is categorically bigger,” Goodwin explained.

While Goodwin is hinting that love might, once again, be the answer, it doesn’t sound that way. Kitsis elaborated that the “usual tricks don’t work anymore” with the new curse. Goodwin added, “The breaking of the curse involves something far more dramatic than anything that’s ever broken a curse before. If it were to break! We could all just be blown into oblivion, and that’s just it.”

Emma Turns a Song into a Weapon on Once Upon a Time>>>

The final battle will be a big moment for Once Upon a Time regardless of how everything turns out. Season 7 of Once Upon a Time has not been announced yet but if it does go ahead the cast will look drastically different. Goodwin and Dallas themselves are expected to be in rapidly reduced roles for season 7, if they appear at all. Meanwhile Jennifer Morrison, the lead of the show, has announced she is leaving at the end of season 6. Goodwin and Dallas promise that the end of season 6 will address all of that and possibly operate as a series finale.

“[The writers] found a magical way to make it go either way,” said Goodwin. “I mean, in classic Once Upon a Time style, there is a twist … and it serves all of the characters very well.”

Josh Dallas backed up his TV and real-life wife and said, “You can’t please everybody. I think that some people will be happy and some people will be angry and upset … each character gets something that the fans should be happy with, that each character deserves. I think most people will be [happy].”

What do you think? Will this curse really be that different? How do you feel about season 6 ending with another curse? Should the season 6 finale become the series finale? Do you have any theories about how the curse will be broken?
