The wait is finally over for Law & Order: SVU fans who have endured four long months without the crime drama series. Tonight, suspense and terror unfold as Detective Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) and Detective Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) attempt to crack a mind-boggling case with a disturbing twist.

Created by Dick Wolf, Law & Order: SVU is a spin-off of Law & Order about the Special Victims Unit in the fictitious 16th Precinct of New York City as they try to solve cases that are references to high-profile real-life cases or famous fictional works.  Apart from lead stars Meloni and Hargitay, the series also features Richard Belzer (Det. John Munch), Ice T (Det. Fin Tutuola), Dann Florek (Capt. Don Cragen), Diane Neal (Casey Novak), and B.D. Wong (Dr. George Huang) just to name a few.

In the season 9 opener entitled “Alternative,” Benson and Stabler investigate a suspected child abuse case.  As the duo dig deeper into the case, with initial resistance from Dr. Henry Carlisle, portrayed by guest star Bronson Pinchot, they learn that the woman who reported it is actually the real case.

As reported previously, Sex and the City‘s Cynthia Nixon will kickoff the premiere as Janis Donovan, a woman with multiple personalities who may have abused and fatally harmed her daughter. Throughout the episode, she continues to present more personalities, including a shrink named Dr. Annie Young and a little girl named Tammy, along with a harrowing twist to the case.  For the detectives, it’s a race against time to find the missing infant, while coping with the sweeping changes in the SVU.

Fans can catch the return of Law & Order: SVU tonight at 10/9c on NBC.  Meanwhile, fans can join new SVU cast member Adam Beach (Det. Chester Lake) for a live blog on the show’s official website before the premiere at 8pm.
