In this episode of iZombie, titled “Spanking the Zombie,” Liv goes full-on E.L. James and eats the brain of a BDSM dominatrix with a roster full of kinky regulars, one of whom might have forgotten the safety word and put her in an early grave. And Major is pushed to face the decision he’s been dreading since the season started: to take the cure and forget, or suffer and keep all his memories.

Crime of the Week

Roxanne, a two week old victim, is Liv’s new brain of a week. But Roxanne is no little angel; in fact, she’s a dominatrix by the name of Sweet Lady Pain. It turns out Roxanne’s brain was the brain that Ravi used in his trials for the memory serum, giving Liv a supercharged recall ability. This brings Clive and Liv to the BDSM sex dungeon of the victim, where they find that one of her regular clients is the man running for mayor, DA Barrachus. They also find her security hard drive stolen, possibly providing motive for the DA, but he has an alibi at a company retreat. Liv has another vision and pieces together that the local weatherman, Frost, is another loyal member of Sweet Lady Pain’s, thus suspect number two, but it is another dead end.

The third vision brings Liv to knocking on the door of a defense lawyer who is another client of the whips and chains, but again, another constant client seems to be a consistent dead end, pointing to the fact that the person who stole Roxanne’s footage might not be one of the usual suspects. The only thing that Liv and Clive can glean from all three is that it seems Miss Lady Pain had a creeper voyeur who immediately becomes the new focus of the investigation.

Frost and the defense lawyer team together to close the case with Liv and Clive. It turns out the kinky weatherman was ransomed for $10,000 just days after Roxanne’s death by the unidentified peeping tom threatening to release a home video of Frost with the BDSM mistress. Frost paid the initial fee and thought all was done, but was again contacted for another ransom, which brings Frost and his lawyer to barter a trade with Clive and Liv, effectively setting a trap for the murderous persona non grata. They conduct a sting with Clive dressing up as an ice cream man in a public park and catch a man by the name of James, the peeping tom extortionist and murderer of Sweet Lady Pain.

Major Reaches the Point of No Return

Harley Johns, the gun range owner who is parading around condemning zombies, was seen at the home of the dead Fillmore Graves family. Fillmore Graves brings him in, at the behest of Liv and the ever-growing human threat, in an effort to dissuade him from digging any further. They dupe him into telling all the secrets, pulling a bait and switch with his trust while they bug his car. He lets his anger get the best of him and informs Fillmore Graves of the fact that he and the rest of the human resistance are mobilizing in the shadows at this very moment. Though he looks like a run-of-the-mill dimwit, the bug in Harley’s car illuminates the fact that the resistance knows that the chaos killer victims are zombies, giving them faces they can confront and attack.

Major is basically the Jason Bourne of zombie mercenaries, flying through the air and killing any enemies in his wake. But he sustains some intense injuries during his time on the front line and, during his healing process, comes closer to death than he has before, requiring an immediate transport to the police department’s medical examiner’s office. It’s the make-or-break moment that has been building since the season started: Major needs to take the cure.

But now they face a bigger problem; Major is too hurt from his war wounds to turn human without instantly dying. Liv, pulling a medical Hail Mary, tends to Major’s wounds delicately, prolonging the need for the cure just a couple more hours, but the writing is on the wall. Knowing that their love as they know it is in jeopardy, Liv and Major come together for one last night of love and embrace before Major forgets his life. It’s a moment of tender goodbyes. And with the plunge of a syringe, Major takes the serum, effectively erasing his memory.
