Supernatural has snagged a genre TV darling for an upcoming role of the spooky road show.  The show returns for its third season next Thursday set to pick up where it left off, in the middle of a war.  The yellow eyed demon behind us, the Winchester boys, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles), are set to clean up the mess they left behind in the close of season 2.  This special guest star, however, is affirmation that some more traditional villains still await the road tripping evil stompers.

Supernatural’s new girl toy will be none other than Mercedes McNab of Angel and Buffy The Vampire Slayer fame.  McNab played Harmony on both shows and according to TV Guide’s Michael Ausiello.  And true to her lineage from those shows, McNab will be once again playing a vampire.

This is good news for fans who were concerned that Supernatural was going to get all ‘serial’ on us and not deliver up any of the wonderful episodic forays that became its trademark during the second season.

One of the charms of Supernatural is the constant presence of either mythological beasties, or genre staples.  The show seems to be at its best when it is recalling the genres high points and pumping them through a contemporary cylinder.

Unfortunately, there was no word on just when McNab would be making her appearance on the show, but if the rumor has come out now it is safe to assume it will definitely be within the next six episodes.

When Supernatural returns next week, however, the boys will be battling for familiar demons in the guise of the deadly seven released at the close of last years season finale.  And of course, keep an eye out for a few new hotties who will be coming along for the ride.
