As Jack, Kate, Sawyer, and Hurley are taken by Michael to meet The Others, Henry foregoes Hurley and just takes the other three. He then releases Walt and allows him and Michael to leave the island. Desmond realizes that he is responsible for the crash because he was late in entering the number into the computer. Locke, meanwhile, is trapped in the hatch with Mr. Eko and Desmond. Flashbacks show Desmond shipwrecked on the island and accidentally killing a man who he lived with inside the hatch.

Mysterious roars are heard from the jungle and trees are found knocked over. Jack, Kate and Charlie set out into the jungle so they can send out a distress signal using the plane's transceiver. A flashback reveals that Jin had to work with Sun’s father for her hand in marriage and Jin has a bloody past.

Rousseau leaves the ship and steals Aaron, Claire’s baby. Meanwhile, they encounter the smoke monster. Charlie and Sayid head toward the smoke and, along the way, the encounter a plane full of heroin. Charlie takes some and, upon arrival at the beach, they find nobody there except Rousseau and Aaron. Rousseau returns Aaron to the two and says she overhead The Others that they are after “the boy.” On the raft, the group encounters another boat which turns out to be occupied by one group of The Others. They shoot Sawyer and take Walt. They throw an explosive toward the raft and it is blown to pieces. Back on the island, the hatch is finally opened. Several flashbacks again reveal their final hours before departure.
