The Closer: Preview of Episode 5.2 "Blood Money"

June 15, 2009

On tonight's episode of The Closer - "Blood Money" - Brenda's (Kyra Sedgwick) team is led to think that a crime isn't what it seems to be.  A rich financier under investigation for ripping off investors seems as if he was kidnapped.  During the probe, meanwhile, Gabriel tries to cover the forensic accounting duties since Det. Daniels was just promoted to another division.  Finally, Brenda and Fritz's lovable cat Kitty is enduring serious medical issues.

If you think this episode of The Closer is far too similar to real life and Sedgwick's tiff with now convicted financier Bernard Madoff, then you're not alone.  The 43-year-old actress and her actor-husband Kevin Bacon was reportedly victimized by the massive Ponzi scheme, but she said they didn't lose everything in the scam.

The Emmys Report: Drama Lead Actor and Actress Races

June 9, 2009

A lot is made of the overwhelming number of great leading roles for women on cable, but if the official Emmy ballots are any indication, women are still a minority when it comes to starring TV roles.  On the official ballot sent to Emmy voters, there are 70 contenders for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, but only 48 for the Lead Actress category.

But the numbers don't help the major networks.  Despite the fact that more than 60 percent of the potential nominees come from the five major networks, it's the cable guys and gals who take the lead at the Emmys.

The Closer: Kyra Sedgwick Talks Season 5 and Another TNT Series

June 9, 2009

The fifth season of The Closer kicked off last night with an episode that saw the team investigating a quadruple murder that may be linked to an FBI case. Of course, there were some notable changes this season and lead star Kyra Sedgwick dished out what's in store for her character Brenda Johnson now that she's married to her FBI beau Fritz (Jon Tenney).

"The theme this year is change, and obviously there's change in the fact that she's married, and she'll have to be married to her job and her husband," the Closer actress explained. "There's obviously talk about having a child, which is challenging for Brenda: believing in a universe that's friendly and benevolent enough and safe enough to have a child."

The Closer: Preview of Season 5 Premiere

June 8, 2009

Other than the return of Weeds and the premiere of Nurse Jackie, Kyra Sedgwick also returns tonight on TNT's crime drama The Closer.  Sedgwick's Brenda Johnson is now married to her FBI beau Fritz (Jon Tenney) which can make matters a little tricky, as her first case of the season lands her right in the middle of an FBI investigation.   On the season 5 premiere episode "Products of Discover," the team is tasked to investigate a quadruple murder.  According to the promo, Brenda "loses someone very dear to her." Sedgwick advised, however, that "It'll be quick and painless, and it'll be soon."

Series creator James Duff says in reference to season five:  "After four years of really getting to know these characters, the fifth season marks a great time to see how they react to major changes both inside and outside the squad room.  We're very excited about where we're taking Brenda and her squad in the coming year."  Also on tonight's episode, Mary McDonnell guests as a new internal affairs officer, a character whom Sedgwick says is the complete opposite of hers.

Those last two have even more TV gigs lined up for the future.  McDonnell will make an extended run on The Closer and Helfer will guest star on this week’s Chuck

The Closer: Preview of Episode 4.11 "Good Faith"

January 26, 2009

After The Closer concluded its 10-week summer season last September, the crime drama resumes airing its five-week winter season beginning tonight at 9/8c on TNT.  As usual, the show will continue with its “power” theme which finds Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson (Kyra Sedgwick) facing challenges coming from the L.A. City Council and dealing with her looming wedding to FBI Agent fiancé Fritz Howard (Jon Tenney).

Last time we saw The Closer, Detective Sanchez (Raymond Cruz) had been shot three times while saving the life of Det. Lt. Provenza (G. W. Bailey) as they tried to capture a killer.  The episode wrapped up as Det. Sanchez was airlifted to a hospital in Brenda's arms.
