Carol Alt is a name that may not resonate among the younger crowd.  Alt is a former supermodel, who has also appeared in some non-famous movies.  And that’s about it.  In the video below in promotion of Alt’s involvement with The Apprentice: Celebrity Edition, you’ll find a very attractive middle-aged woman, who seems as decent and well-spoken as one could hope for, especially for a former model.  The heyday of the “supermodel” seems to have passed, with the 1980’s and 90’s crop of Cindy Crawford, Alt, Kathy Ireland, Tyra Banks, Helena Christensen and others giving way to a less recognizable batch of supermodels.  Why this is the case, who knows?  The point is, Carol Alt is a famous name, and one who was helped by an era in which models were placed on a sort of pedestal of fame, and that if she had come along in the year 2007 Alt probably would not have reached the sort of fame she did in the eighties and nineties.

Here’s the video from NBC:

The stuff about her late brother and his love of kids is pretty touching, and I was impressed by her modesty. If the reason she’s climbed back into the limelight with The Apprentice was merely for her brother’s memory, then that is a worthy reason.

Cynically, one might say that the only reason she was cast on The Celebrity Apprentice was for some needed eye candy, one of the token attractive ladies on the show.  It’s not like Alt has been famous lately.  Her name is still alive in the cultural zeitgeist, but I doubt most people would be able to pick her out of a line-up at this point.  Time has been kind to Alt (although some work may have been done) and, prior to this upcoming Apprentice appearance, she hasn’t been pathetically grasping for any kind of fame, like lots of past their prime celebrities.  But, I’d like to think that Alt is doing it for her charity and not for any attempt at career resurrection.
