'Supernatural' Preview: "In the Beginning" Offers Up Big Answers

Matt CohenThe latest episodes of Supernatural have introduced a lot of interesting mythology to the series, but the show still hasn't answered some burning questions from its first couple seasons.  We've been waiting ages to discover why Mary recognized the Yellow-Eyed Demon in "All Hell Breaks Loose," and there are also a lot of unanswered questions regarding Sam's powers and his ultimate destiny.  I've had a chance to see this Thursday's Supernatural episode, entitled "In the Beginning," and I can assure fans that these things will definitely be addressed.  It's a fantastic installment of the series that fills in some huge gaps, and I can't wait to see how fans react to it.

To get Winchester addicts ready for Thursday night, we have some photos and a clip from the episode.

The CW's official description of the episode reads: "Dean (Jensen Ackles) is transported back in time and is shocked when he lands in Lawrence, Kansas.  However, that shock turns to amazement after he runs into a young John Winchester and Mary, who have just fallen in love.  Dean isn't sure why he was sent back so he begins to enjoy the time with his parents and newfound grandfather, who may be hiding a secret that is key to Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean's entire predicament."

The first photo shows actor Matt Cohen doing his best Jeffrey Dean Morgan impression as the young John Winchester.  Those hoping for a lot of back story about John may be disappointed, as the episode mostly focuses on Mary and her family.

The next picture gives us our first glimpse at the young Mary, played by Amy Gumenick.  This is the first major role for the actress, but she does a fantastic job in the episode.

The final photo shows Dean's grandparents, played by Allison Hossak and the one and only Mitch Pileggi.  I can't think of better casting for Grandpa Samuel than Pileggi, who is most well-known for playing Skinner on The X-Files.  Check BuddyTV later this week for our exclusive interview with the actor, where he discusses his work on the show as well as his numerous other projects.

The clip from the episode shows Dean chatting up a young guy in a diner, and he soon figures out that the man he's speaking to is the 1973 version of his father.  Thanks to a little push from Castiel, Dean has been sent back to the past to attempt to change the course of history.

The new episode of Supernatural, "In the Beginning," airs this Thursday at 9pm on the CW.  I can't guarantee it'll answer all of your lingering questions, but it will answer many of them.
