Supernatural: Is Ruby in Love With Sam?
Supernatural: Is Ruby in Love With Sam?
Ruby has been a controversial character among Supernatural fans since her introduction in season 3 of the series, and that certainly didn't change when actress Genevieve Cortese took over the role.  Some people, including myself, have found Cortese's acting skills to be a bit distracting, though most would agree that she's improved in recent episodes.  Performance aside, the fact remains that Ruby is a shady, possibly untrustworthy character.  We don't know if her true motivation is to help the boys or use them as her pawns, and until that becomes clear it may be impossible to warm up to Ruby.

In a recent interview with TV Guide, Cortese revealed her theory as to why Ruby is helping the Winchesters.  Could she actually be in love with Sam?
Not all titles featured on BuddyTV are available through Amazon Prime.

In the interview, Cortese talked about the importance of explaining why the Winchesters would work with Ruby.  "If you look at Katie's last episode, you see that while Ruby's not responsible for Dean going to hell, she does have some guilt about it," the actress pointed out.  "I wanted to use some of that, though not as a sympathy card ... I wanted to address questions like, 'Why are the boys hanging out with her? What do they need her for at this point?'  It's not like she is kicking ass; she's asking Sam to kick ass for her, so it's kind of a mutual exchange.  I almost feel like, deep down, she's really in love with Sam.  One of the lines in ['I Know What You Did Last Summer'] is, 'I used to be human, and I still remember what it feels like.'  Maybe she was being manipulative, sure, but maybe there's also truth to it."

The idea of Ruby being in love with Sam is an interesting one, but I really don't get that vibe from their scenes together.  It seems as though her one goal is to convince Sammy to use his powers, which is something that's only going to lead to trouble.  Why is she so intent on leading him down that path?  Is it because she loves him and truly wants to help him do good, or is she pulling a Darth Vader and trying to lead him to the dark side?  Ruby has been undeniably helpful since her first appearance on Supernatural, but she almost seems a little too helpful for a demon.  I agree with Dean that it's better to keep a close eye on her.

I'm hoping we'll find out more about Ruby's true intentions when Supernatural returns with new episodes on January 15.  In the meantime, comment below with your thoughts on whether Ruby is truly trustworthy and lovesick, or evil and manipulative.
