Smallville ended season 8 with a shocking double murder as Davis and Jimmy both died, but the real shock was the rise of the villainous Zod. But he's not the only one gunning for Clark's head. There are new villains and new heroes on the show for season 9, and all of them are essential in fulfilling the destiny of Superman.
The
spoilers below have very little shame.
According to
TV Guide magazine, being the Red Blue Blur has been growing into an obsession for
Clark Kent (Tom Welling). He'll be employing a "new approach to fighting crime," which has something to do with the abundance of iconic "S" symbols this season.
The action kicks off easily on this installment of
Smallville, as we'll already get a peek at the new villains for season 9. There are also a number of new heroes, as we'll come to learn in January.
KryptonSite has unveiled several spoilers for the series' return next year. First off is the episode "Disciple," where
Steve Bacic appears as the Dark Archer. He was once the mentor of the
Green Arrow (Justin Hartley), and now he's back to cause some trouble for him. He kidnaps three important women in his life, which will certainly be quite a blow.
Meanwhile, Oliver's sidekick Mia Dearden (Elise Gatien) aka Speedy will return as well. It's going to be quite a teacher-student experience for these three when the new episode arrives.
Next up is the episode
"Warrior", where Chloe (Allison Mack) meets her very own love interest. It's Steven Swift playing the Warrior Angel, who she meets in a Metropolis Wonder-Con held in the city. Also on this installment is the return of Serinda Swan, taking on her role as Zatanna.
Her return's going to be quite a handful for
Lois (Erica Durance), who witnesses the trickster locking lips with Clark. She's even going to don her own costume for this episode, given how it's a comic-con and all.
But the most exciting bit of the season is, of course, the Smallville movie. Titled "A
bsolute Justice" and penned by Geoff Johns, it's no doubt the JSA-themed flick will draw in any fan of the show. Zod may not be on it, but that doesn't matter as much.
Michael Shanks, who has been cast as Hawkman, told the
Huffington Post some details on his
Smallville character. He also spilled the beans on his fellow Justice Society members, like Doctor Fate and Stargirl.
Shanks said, "Let's just say that a few of the Justice Society characters have come out of retirement to meet up with an old foe and happen to cross paths with Clark and some of the characters from the Justice League. And let's just say there are some misunderstandings. [...] There's going to be some conflict. Both with heroes and villains alike."
It also begins with a death,
according to Britt Irvin, who plays Stargirl. That casualty will bring the JSA and Clark's team together, even though plenty of mishaps occur along the way.
On
Hawkman: "Hawkman being the alpha in the Justice Society, being someone who...has made some missteps along the way, can or could represent a type of mentor character to Clark in his leadership abilities with his burgeoning team members of the Justice League. He represents a character that has a lot of wisdom to pass down to this next generation, so there is a strong possibility that once the initial phase wears off that there will be a coming together of those two to paint a larger portrait of the future, of what Clark has available to him and what his options are."
On
Doctor Fate: "There's a really neat relationship between he and Hawkman that makes the first episode quite heart-wrenching. There are aspects of it that are heart-wrenching as a result of that relationship. And I thought that was a very cool aspect of the first episode."
Actor Justin Hartley has long since commented on his character's little rivalry with Hawkman, heightening the tension between the two as they meet. The star said, [T]hey realize toward the end that while they might not ever accept each other, they agree to disagree. It's the difference between accepting someone and respecting them, like, 'Hey, look - I don't agree with you, but I can't take away the fact that you're driven, your heart is big, and you're a good guy. I get it.'"
Hearing about Dr. Fate and Hawkman leaves one to wonder, what exactly will
Stargirl be doing on "Absolute Justice"?
Fancast reports that she'll be busy with our very own Clark Kent.
Guest star Britt Irvin told the publication that Stargirl "has a special connection with Clark, because he reminds her a lot of her mentor."
Martian Manhunter will also be appearing on the second hour of the movie, known as "Legends."
ComicBookMovie reports a change in his look. He'll finally dress up in his trademark red and green suit, as well as have the X trademark designed on it.
Joining him as a star on the movie is Pam Grier, who'll be playing the
villainous Agent Amanda Waller. Several
previews of Absolute Justice has also revealed the addition of Sandman aka Wesley Dodds, supposedly played by Ken Lawson.
Smallville executive producer Brian Peterson has also
divulged some details regarding Absolute Justice. He said that the JSA is returning "to teach all of our heroes a lesson about family and leadership from the mistakes of their own past."
Aside from the JSA though, there's the return of
Metallo in a future episode. Brian Austin Green will portray the character once again. Also hoping to return is season 3's
Perry White (Michael McKean), the alcoholic tabloid reporter who almost exposed Clark's secret. Brian Peterson hinted that 'The Chief' will most likely be "working his way to the Daily Planet."
He won't be the only one
returning to Metropolis, as
Martha Kent (Annette O'Toole) will be back as well. She's come all the way from Washington to bring some mom-ish yet "unexpected surprises" for Clark.
But one thing we expected is another Kryptonite episode for our hero. On the episode
"Persuasion", he'll have to deal with a Red one that gives him the power to do just that. Matt Mitovich of
Fancast.com revealed that it's going to have immense consequences, particularly with Clark's relationship with his friends.
However, what really matters here is his relationship with Lois, who apparently moves in with him for Valentine's Day. During a date, he convinces her of taking on a more "traditional" role in their relationship. It's the Kryptonite talking, and Lois agrees, quitting her job and starts planning her wedding with him.
Things get worse when Clark tells Chloe to look out for him, and she sets her sights on Lois as a threat. Kryptonite always seems to complicate things, doesn't it?
Following that would be
"Conspiracy," in which Zod ends up working with Clark. The Kandorians start going missing, and it's up to the two to solve the case.
Next up is
"Escape," wherein we get to see a new villain surface on the scene. Actress
Odessa Rae has been tapped to play the vengeful spirit known as The Silver Banshee, who is accidentally released from the underworld to Metropolis.
There's just so much to take in on this season of
Smallville, making it yet another explosive installment for the show.
