Make Me A Supermodel: A Closer Look

On January 10, Bravo will unveil its latest reality show, Make Me A Supermodel.  The show will be hosted by two supermodels themselves, Niki Taylor and Tyson Beckford.  Taylor burst onto the fashion scene at the age of 17 when she appeared on the cover of Seventeen magazine.  She was also the first model under the age of 18 to sign a major deal with Cover Girl and is well known for her many appearance in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issues in the late 90s.  Beckford has had an extremely successful modeling career which he has parlayed into an acting career, having been featured in a dozen movies.  The reality show may be new to us in the states but is already a popular show in the UK.  Let's see if we can get some clues as to what we can look forward to by looking back at the hit from across the pond.

On paper, the show does not appear to be that far of a cry from America's Next Top Model.  On the UK version of Make Me A Supermodel, the show was hosted by Rachel Hunter.  The winner was given a deal with Select Model Management and the head of the company, Tandy Anderson, served as a judge.  Perou, a fashion photographer, rounded out the panel of judges.   In season one, only females competed but in season two, the show changed things up by having six men go up against six women.  The show's finale includes a runway walkoff between the finalists, just like Top Model.  The UK series was cancelled after just two seasons, much to the dismay of the fans.

The main question about the upcoming Bravo series is not so much if its too similar to Top Model but rather, can a winner of the show actually be accepted in the modeling world?  Bravo has had extremely successful contestants from shows like Top Chef and Project Runway.  A winner from Make Me A Supermodel that blows up in the fashion world would only add to the network's already solid credibility.

Does Make Me A Supermodel feel too similar to Top Model?
Yes, they seem almost exactly alike!
No, I'm sure they'll find a way to be different.
