New Characters Heading for 'Lost'

Details on two new recurring Lost characters have leaked out onto the internet sending news starved fans into a tizzy of speculation.  The first real news about what sort of people may possibly be on the approaching freighter, or a different group of people are together, are outlined, but Lost fans would do well to remember that last year Lost's clever creative staff used bogus character information to send fans in the wrong direction.

The first of the two new characters is named Russell.  From his description, it would be fair to bet that he is involved in Dharma or a similar organization.  In his article at TV Guide, Michael Ausiello described Russell as being “a brilliant mathematician in his late thirties who is "capable of great insights and has a tremendous knowledge across various scientific fields.”  In addition, Russell is a little too direct for his own good and not known for making many friends.

The second character is a twenty something described as being ‘hot' and intelligent, able to get herself out of tough situations.  Interestingly enough, she also has some trouble dealing with people.

Nimble brained Lost fans will remember that a character named Charlotte has been featured previously on Lost.  The teenaged daughter of faux psychic Charlotte Malkin who returned from a near death experience with a message for Mr. Eko.  Could the character represent an older version of the character seen in season two?  With the recent time traveling sub-plots, it is certainly not impossible.

Another thing overzealous Lost fans should consider before they invest too much in figuring out how these characters may fit into the Lost universe is the fact that Lost reserves the right to release completely bogus character descriptions for their casting calls. It is also not so uncommon for the characters to wind up not playing as large of a role as may be implied.

A good example is Horace and Olivia Goodspeed from “The Man Behind the Curtain.”  The casting call was first thought to be a mask for two more well known characters, the DeGroots, and ultimately it turned out that either character, so far, really had much exciting to offer beyond explaining Ben's (Michael Emerson) arrival on the island.

Of course for now, any Lost news is good news.
