ABC and the the Lost team have been aggressive and very smart about how they’ve recapped Lost throughout its first three seasons.  The various catch-up specials, coming twice a year or so, have allowed new viewers to jump right into new episodes without feeling like they’ve missed anything.  Now, ABC and Lost may accomplished their greatest recapping feat yet – the first three seasons, impeccably packaged into one narrated eight minute and fifteen second clip (8:15, get it?).  On ABC’s Lost home page, this lightning fast recap goes through the major moments from the first three seasons in impressive detail, and is pithily narrated with one-liners and inside commentary.

I used to scoff at anyone who watched those recap episodes and considered themselves “caught up,” if you will.  I was stead fast in my belief that to understand a show as dense and rewarding as Lost, you had to watch every episode and pay close attention every episode.  While I still partly believe this to be true, I understand how cool those recap shows are.  I have a buddy who, on a whim, decided to watch the big recap special that ran prior to season three.  He’d never watched Lost before, but after that special he was equipped with more than enough information to start watching, and so he did.  Now he’s a huge fan.  And, eventually, he’ll have the pleasure of going back and watching those first two seasons on DVD.

If anything, this new and concise recap is a great primer for loyal fans to refresh their memories as the fourth season draws near.  It’s definitely not necessary, and I wouldn’t even go so far as to recommend it for anything other than it’s sometimes funny narrator.  But, if you are feeling a bit foggy on seasons one or two, it won’t hurt to take eight and a quarter minutes of your day and give the recap a look.
