Izzie Stevens, where art thou? That's the question former Grey's Anatomy
star Katherine Heigl wants answered. In a recent interview with E!
promoting her new movie, One for the Money, Heigl revealed her desire
to return to the show that won her an Emmy and helped launch her film
"I've told them I want to [come back]" Heigl said, though she acknowledged that it's entirely dependent on whether the show's writers had a story for her.
She also explained what she thinks Izzie's return might look like. "I really, really, really want to see where [Izzie] is. I just want to know what happened to her and where she went and what she's doing now. My idea is that she actually like figures it out, and finds some success and does really well in a different hospital."
Fans of Grey's Anatomy last saw Izzie two years ago when she left once and for all after failing to reconcile with Alex. She was in good health following her cancer and vowed to go somewhere else and start over.
But is Izzie returning to Grey's Anatomy
a good idea? If the fact that her ex-husband and all her former friends were shot and featured on a TV special wasn't enough to bring her back, I'm not sure what would.
I'll admit that whenever Grey's Anatomy
comes to its end, I would like an update on what happened to Izzie, but I'm not sure squeezing her in earlier is worth it. As Heigl said, the show has plenty of other storylines and Alex has seemingly moved on, so bringing her back would just be reopening old wounds.
I have nothing against Heigl, but if Izzie did come back, I'd like it to be as a corpse. I could see Alex suddenly getting a phone call that, after spending two years successfully being a doctor at another hospital, her cancer came back and she died. That sense of permanent closure might be interesting for Alex as a character, a lot more interesting than seeing him have lunch with a happy, shiny Izzie who is enjoying her second life.
Realistically, bringing Katherine Heigl back to Grey's Anatomy
would be purely sentimental and a potential ratings stunt, but story-wise, Izzie Stevens is gone and not worth a second thought to the characters at Seattle Grace. Having her return to the hospital would most likely be awkward, forced and pointless, so as far as I'm concerned, the show doesn't need her.
