Battlestar Galactica: Five Things We Hope to See Before the Hiatus
Tuesday, June 10, 2008

Edward James Olmos, Jamie BamberWe're only a few days away from the midseason finale of Battlestar Galactica.  After the credits roll on "Revelations" we'll likely have to wait until 2009 before seeing the final ten episodes of the series.  With such a long hiatus in store, it's time for the BSG writers to pull out all the stops and attempt to leave us with our minds blown.

With the hiatus growing closer, we decided to come up with a list of five things we hope to see in this Friday's episode.  We tried to keep the list narrowed down to things that might actually be revealed, which is why you won't find us pondering the mystery behind Starbuck's disappearance.  These are not only things we long to see, but things we think the writers may actually show us.  Let's get on with the list.

1)  A Kiss Between Roslin and Adama

For many Battlestar Galactica fans, myself included, the relationship between Admiral Adama (Edward James Olmos) and President Roslin is the true heart of the show.  It's been such a slow process to watch them go from rivals to friends to standing on the precipice of something more.  Last week, in one of the most emotional moments of the season, Adama and Roslin reunited aboard the Cylon Basestar.  She told him she loved him, he said "About time," and I had to grab three hankies to dab my eyes.

Maybe I'm being greedy, and maybe it'll never happen, but a kiss between Roslin and Adama would be fantastic.  The show is nearing an end and the former president may soon die of cancer, so get a kiss in already!

2)  An Explanation for the Opera House Visions

The opera house visions have been plaguing a few of BSG's characters for quite some time, and I thought we might finally get some answers when Roslin (Mary McDonnell) and Baltar went to see the Cylon Hybrid. However, when the visions drove Athena to kill Natalie, the Basestar started jumping and everyone got kind of distracted from the goal at hand.  Roslin is nearly home, and she's still no closer to knowing what the opera house visions are supposed to mean.

I know the Hybrid is notoriously cryptic and tough to understand, but before going back to the fleet I think Roslin and Baltar (James Callis) need to practice some Jack Bauer-style interrogation tactics on her.  Let's get this whole vision thing explained before the show goes on hiatus.

3)  The Cylon Reaction to Tigh's Baby

One of the biggest revelations in "Sine Qua Non" was that Tigh (Michael Hogan) knocked up Caprica Six during his visits to the brig.  This is a massive development for the Cylons, but we didn't get to see what sort of impact this news will have among the toasters.  Now that D'Anna (Lucy Lawless) is back, maybe she can discover the news that a baby with two Cylon parents is on the way.  News of this caliber would cause shockwaves throughout the Cylon community, and perhaps change their whole game plan now that they only have one life to live.

4)  Political Upheaval

I'm hoping that the Battlestar Galactica writers didn't spend an entire episode making Lee (Jamie Bamber) president only to have Roslin return and assume the mantle once again.  That would seem awfully anticlimactic, wouldn't it?  I'm sure that Roslin will want to return to office, but it's possible that the Quorum and Tom Zarek (Richard Hatch) will do everything in their power to ensure she doesn't.  The fact that she's dying is certainly a good argument for forcing her retirement.  This change in command could lead the humans on an entirely different path, which would make for interesting television.

5)  The Reveal of the Final Cylon

There's a debate around the BuddyTV office about whether the identity of the final Cylon will be revealed before the midseason hiatus.  I don't think it will be, but I certainly wouldn't mind if D'Anna let the cat out of the bag.  We're going to need something huge to discuss while we wait until 2009 for the series to return, and dropping the biggest bombshell of them all would certainly keep fans buzzing.  For speculation on who the final Cylon could be, read our article here.

We'll find out if any of these things are revealed when the midseason finale of Battlestar Galactica, "Revelations," airs Friday at 10pm on the Sci Fi Channel.
