The Originals season 4 being delayed until early 2017 is upsetting news to fans of the CW vampire drama, but the delay could bring about some interesting twists to the story’s timeline. Executive producer Julie Plec recently told TVLine what the shifted air date could mean for the structure of the new season. Plus, Plec teases the return of a certain Vampire Diaries character. Find out all the juicy details on your favorite vampire dramas below.

The Originals Season 4 Time-Jump

It looks like the delay from Fall 2016 to Winter 2017 is the best option for The Originals in terms of the story, and for The Vampire Diaries in terms of continuity. That’s according to showrunner Julie Plec anyway, but who would know better than her? According to her, the delay allows the new season to pick up even further in the future than originally planned, and apparently that’ll be a good thing.

“When they shifted the air date, it actually gave us the freedom, weirdly, to shift the timeline in our favor so that we could have more time pass in The Originals between seasons than The Vampire Diaries,” Plec says. “So we get to add an extra couple years on to our timelapse between seasons. It’s actually a good thing. It’s positive to not have to worry about being side by side.”

You have to admit, it’s nice to see that Plec is actually concerned enough that the shows storylines make sense next to each other. If having to wait a few extra months to catch up with the Mikaelson family is the price we have to pay to avoid the frustration of plot holes between the shows, so be it.

Should Kai Return to The Vampire Diaries?

Speaking of The Vampire Diaries, Plec went on to tease a discussion they repeatedly have in the TVD writers’ room — specifically concerning the return of the illustrious Kai.

“Every day in the writers’ room, we’re pitching Kai comeback ideas,” she teases. “Maybe one day we’ll hit on a good one!”

In case you’ve forgotten, Kai (aka Malachi Parker) was beheaded after getting into a major confrontation with Damon at the end of season 6. However, the show is no stranger to bringing characters back from impossible circumstances. Kai’s presence, while maleficent, was a fun one to have on the show. Plec and the other writers certainly seem to want him to return in some way, but if nothing has been worked out by now, it doesn’t feel likely that we would see that return in the near future, if at all.
