There are far too many dancing shows on television right now.  It is a phenomenon that doesn’t quite make sense.  When American Idol burst onto the scene, singing competitions didn’t take off, not really.  Sure, there’s Nashville Star, and Star Search made a tiny comeback, and America’s Got Talent has singers, but it’s nothing like the dancing shows that So You Think You Can Dance spawned.  Yes, So You Think You Can Dance.  The FOX amateur dance contest came before ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, and it can be argued that the FOX series is responsible for the glut of dance-themed series currently loitering on our air waves.  However, it baffles me how anyone can watch So You Think You Can Dance, with its young and multi-talented contestants, and then watch the weak-sauce routines featured on Dancing with the Stars

FOX has announced the early season broadcast schedule for So You Think You Can Dance – check it out below.

Thursday, May 22: 8-10pm – Season Premiere, Audition Episode #1

Monday, May 26, 8-10pm – Season Premiere Encore

Wednesday, May 28, 8-10pm – Audition Episode #2

Thursday, May 29, 8-10pm – Audition Episode #3

Wednesday, June 4, 8-10pm – Audition Episode #4

Thursday, June 5, 8-10pm – Las Vegas Round, Top 20 Revealed

From there, So You Think You Can Dance will move into a weekly schedule: two-hour performance episode from 8-10pm on Wednesdays, followed by a one-hour results show at 9pm on Thursdays.  One male and one female will be eliminated every week until the top ten.  Once there, it’s one at a time, and solely up to the viewers’ votes (up until the top ten, the judges have the last call).

Cat Deeley is back as the host, and Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy will serve as the two permanent judges.  Guest judges, such as Dan Karaty, Adam Shankman and Mia Michaels will rotate throughout the season.
