Sanjaya Malakar became the subject of news ever since his inclusion on American Idol season 6. And now that he’s finally eliminated off the popular talent competition, the hype about the controversial former Idol contestant just got bigger and more intriguing. With the media digging up dirt on the controversial singer, it was discovered that Malakar’s family was involved with some kind of farming…marijuana cultivation that is!

According to TMZ.com, Malakar’s mom, Jillian Blith, and his stepfather, Charles Quist, were both arrested and charged with unlawful manufacturing of controlled substance in February 2005. It was reported that 310 marijuana plants were actually found in the family’s garage. In addition to his mom and his stepfather, his sister Shyamali, who also auditioned for American Idol season 6 was arrested and charged with possession of controlled substance.

Based on the charging documents, residents near the family’s house got alarmed when they smelled the stench of marijuana and even saw Blith “install a large vent on the roof of the garage.” It was also mentioned that there was an excessive use of power based on the electricity meter reading and that the family generally spent most of their time in the garage. However, Blith and Quist were nowhere to be found, so Shyamali, who was tasked to manage the operations, was arrested and charged. Consequently, Blith pled guilty and received a minor 30-day jail sentence.

There are no indications of Malakar’s involvement in the 2005 bust. On the other hand, he previously stated that he was very close to his mother and sister, and even said that his mother strongly influenced his life. In a media conference after his elimination on American Idol, he said, “It was actually my mom’s idea to get the GED and focus on [my singing career], because I had a little bit of trouble in school. Not because I didn’t know the material. I just didn’t really do my homework, which the horrible habit that I had. I wanted to get my GED so that I could move on and focus on what I really wanted to do, which was music.”

Could Sanjaya possibly be involved in the felonious activity? What do you think?
