Imagine if the inimitable characters on the CW hit Gossip Girl are breathing, living people. Imagine that Blair (Leighton Meester) is really a conniving vixen and Chuck (Ed Westwick) is a hot wicked thing who perpetually speaks in whispers.
Imagine no more. Bravo has a reality show that follows the lives of the so-called key players in Manhattan’s elite high school scene. Set against New York’s Upper East Side, NYC Prep is the reality series version of Gossip Girl, and like the series, it involves exclusive midnight parties, shopping sprees, and gaudy relationships. Viewers will get to know the prep’s families, their entourage, and the their guys/girls at the moment.
The six teenagers on NYC Prep include Camille, 16, who tries to balance studying, lacrosse practice, the debate team, and bolstering her college application case; Kelli, 17, who is the most recent import to the Manhattan party scene, and loves exploring New York’s many restaurants while trying to jumpstart her own singing career; PC, 18, who is a photography buff, a music aficionado, and trying to arrange his life for college, Sebastian, 16, who is a native French speaker and uses it to woo girls, and plays soccer and tennis; and Taylor, 15, who doesn’t let academic pressure interfere with her extra-curricular activities, that includes gymnastics, hockey, debate, and student-led demonstrations in Union Square.
Already, the blogosphere had been abuzz with anticipation for NYC Prep, mainly because of the sensational hit Gossip Girl. Critics said they’d be careful in writing about the show’s characters, however, as they are presumably real people, not like the fictional Blair, Chuck, Nate, Serena, Dan, and Jenny in the Gossip Girl universe.
“Bravo continues to intrigue audiences with real-life depictions of relatable characters who live in exclusive worlds,” said Frances Berwick, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Bravo Media. “We’ll watch as these teenagers manage the ups and downs of not only being in high school, but what comes along with growing up as part of New York’s elite.”
